The First Day Back

Read the display before you open the door.
The temperatures showing now are what it has been holding. On a Sub-Zero Built-In 600-2 the control also keeps a log a technician can read back, two hours at a time, including when the power was out.

Smell before you taste.
A sour smell means it warmed at some point. If you cannot tell for how long, the USDA’s advice is short: when in doubt, throw it out.

Throw out the first ice.
The first bins are made from water that sat in the line all summer. Let the ice maker make fresh.

Start the season with a new water filter.
A filter that sat wet for months has done its time. Change it now rather than waiting for the indicator.
