Sub-Zero, Viking, Monogram: side by side.
Under similar stainless the three are built differently: two sealed systems in a Sub-Zero built-in, an inverter-driven compressor in a Viking, a condenser loop foamed into a Monogram cabinet. This is what the makers’ own service literature says about each — and what it changes when one fails.
The Three, From Their Manuals
Each column is one series and one manual: the Sub-Zero Built-In 600-2 series technical service manual; Viking’s 2012 service manual for the 5 Series built-in all-refrigerator (VCRB5301 and VCRB5361); GE’s service guide for Monogram ZIS side-by-side refrigerators, 36 to 48 inches. A dash means the manual we hold does not say.

Sub-Zero: two of everything.
A built-in Sub-Zero does not split one cold supply between two compartments with a damper; it runs two complete refrigeration circuits that never meet. The manual’s design pays off in humidity — produce keeps longer, and the freezer does not smell of dinner — and it changes the diagnosis. When the freezer is perfect and the refrigerator is warm, one entire system has stopped while its twin runs, and it is diagnosed and priced on its own.
The same manual routes the hot discharge gas through a loop in the door gasket seat and around the drain pan before the condenser, so the cabinet does not sweat and defrost water evaporates. It is elegant, and it means a refrigerant leak can appear somewhere that looks nothing like a refrigeration component.
Viking: an inverter, not a switch.
Line voltage reaches the inverter from a high-voltage board, and a low-voltage board tells the inverter how hard to run the compressor. So a silent Viking can be an inverter, a board or a thermistor that has stopped reporting, as easily as a compressor — and the control also enforces a six-minute dwell before it will restart the compressor at all. Replacing a compressor that was never faulty is an expensive way to learn that, which is why we test in that order.
The inverter reports with flashes rather than a display code: one flash for normal operation, two for no signal from the control board, three for an open circuit on the compressor or inverter side.
Monogram: the loop you cannot replace.
GE’s guide puts the condenser at the top of a Monogram side-by-side, behind the grille, drawing air in from the left of the machine compartment and out to the right. It also names the one component that is not serviceable: the condenser loop, copper tubing foamed permanently into the cabinet and routed around the freezer opening to keep the frame from sweating. A leak there is a different conversation from a leak anywhere else.
Two smaller details from the same guide: a replacement filter-dryer needs half an ounce of added refrigerant, and the capillary tube is held against the compressor discharge tube by a clip. Left off after a repair, the machine knocks. It is a clip, not a compressor.
Comparison Questions
Do Sub-Zero, Viking and Monogram use the same refrigerant?
In the series covered by these manuals, all three use R-134a. Newer series can differ, so the rating tag inside the cabinet — not the brand — says what a given unit holds.
Why does a Sub-Zero run half warm and half cold?
Because a built-in Sub-Zero runs two independent sealed systems, one for each compartment, with nothing shared. When one system fails the other keeps running, so the refrigerator can be warm while the freezer is perfect. It is diagnosed and priced as one system, not the whole machine.
Which of the three shows error codes?
The Sub-Zero 600-2 shows codes on its display for thermistor, defrost, ice maker valve and compressor faults. A Viking inverter reports with one, two or three flashes. GE’s service guide for the Monogram ZIS side-by-side has no fault-code table, so a Monogram is diagnosed from its symptoms.
Is one of the three easier to repair than the others?
Each has a known parts list and a known procedure, and none of the three is a bad machine to own. The one genuinely different case is the Monogram condenser loop, which is foamed into the cabinet and cannot be replaced; a leak there changes the conversation from repair to replacement.
