Glendale appliance repair.
The median house in Glendale was built in 1986, and in ZIP code 85308, around Arrowhead Ranch, in 1992, by the Census Bureau’s latest five-year estimates. A kitchen from those years may hold a built-in from a series older than the names in today’s catalog. The first job is to find out exactly which machine it is.
Which series is it?
ZIP code 85308 has 26,953 homes by the same estimates, and 10,208 of them, 38 percent, were built between 1990 and 1999. Another 7,481 date from the eighties. The year of the house is not the year of the machine: kitchens are remodeled and refrigerators replaced. But where the first built-in is still in its opening, it belongs to an earlier generation than anything in a showroom now.
The badge on the door says Sub-Zero, Viking or Monogram. It does not say which series, and the series decides the answer. Sub-Zero renamed its full-size lines: Built-In became Classic, and Integrated became Designer. The numbered families that came before those names, the 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700, are still answered by number on Sub-Zero’s own support pages. An old manual with the old name on its cover is still the right one. Which Sub-Zero series is which.
Can it still be serviced? That turns on the model number and not on the age. Our guide to how long a built-in lasts gives the short list of what ends one: a part that is no longer manufactured, or a fault in something never meant to be replaced, such as the condenser loop that GE’s service guide for the Monogram side-by-side names as not serviceable. Age is not on that list. The parts that have opened, closed and turned ever since the nineties are ordinary ones, and each has a name and a known repair.
So the useful thing to send is the tag. With the model and the serial we can tell which series it is, which of the maker’s documents apply to it, and whether the likely part is still supplied, before anyone drives to Glendale.
We repair Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking and Monogram in Glendale: built-in refrigerators and freezers, ice makers, wine storage, and the ranges and wall ovens in the same kitchens. The diagnostic visit is $119, waived if you go ahead with the repair. Work on the four makes carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labor, with the genuine parts we supply.
Year built: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates, tables B25035 (median year structure built) and B25034 (year structure built), for Glendale and for ZIP Code Tabulation Area 85308, read through Census Reporter. Identifying an Older Built-In
- 01
Find the tag, not the badge.
The model and serial are on a rating tag inside the cabinet. On a Sub-Zero Classic, and on the 200, 300, 500 and 600 Series, it is by the top door hinge. On a Viking built-in it is on a plate high inside the compartment; on a Monogram built-in, behind the grille panel at the top. Every location, maker by maker.
- 02
Read the letters.
On a Sub-Zero, BI or CL means Classic and IT or IC means Designer. A model number that begins with a number belongs to one of the numbered families. On the Built-In 600-2, the letter after the slash is only the finish, and “-2” marks the second design of the series.
- 03
Date it from the serial.
A Monogram serial opens with two letters that code the month and the year. The year letters repeat every twelve years, so the design of the unit settles which. A Sub-Zero Built-In 600-2 prints the date of manufacture on the tag. Sub-Zero files service history under the serial number and the customer’s last name, which matters in a house that has changed hands.
- 04
Ask what the maker still publishes.
Sub-Zero answers by series, and the answers differ. The defrost drain can be seen and cleaned on the 200, 300, 500 and 600; on the Classic, Designer, 700, 400 and 648PRO, Sub-Zero keeps a clogged drain for its own service network. The 500, 600 and 700 Series have no water filter, and the earlier 600 and 700 have no air cartridge to look for.
