Mesa appliance repair.

In Mesa the gas company may be the city itself. The City of Mesa runs its own natural gas utility across 95 square miles of Mesa, and its map marks a Southwest Gas area on the east side as well. On a gas range that settles whom you call about the supply and, before anything else, whom you call if you smell gas.

Whose gas is it?

Between the street and the burner there are three owners. The City of Mesa says of its own system that it owns, operates and maintains the gas piping up to and including the meter outside the house. From the meter to every gas appliance, indoors and out, the piping belongs to the property owner and is the owner’s to maintain, in the City’s words much like plumbing and electrical systems. The third is the appliance.

The appliance is our work. On a Wolf, Viking or Monogram range that means what is inside the machine: the igniters and the module that fires them, the gas valves, the burners, the oven sensor and the controls. The pipe in the wall, a new connection, or a conversion from natural gas to propane is not. Viking’s installation guide gives conversion to the dealer, a qualified licensed plumber or a gas service company, and the owner’s piping is a licensed gas contractor’s work. The supply and its pressure are the utility’s.

Which utility? The name on the gas bill answers it. The City counts over 82,000 homes and businesses on its own system, in Mesa and in a second service area to the southeast that reaches into Queen Creek and San Tan Valley. Its map of natural gas areas shows the City’s territory across most of the west and north of Mesa, a Southwest Gas service area on the east and southeast side, and narrow strips marked as joint areas where both serve.

If you smell gas, nothing else on this page applies. The City of Mesa’s instruction for a rotten-egg odor is to leave the area and report it immediately: call 9-1-1 and the City’s gas emergency line, 480-644-4277. It adds not to turn electrical switches on or off, ring a doorbell, smoke, or use matches or lighters where the smell is. If your bill says Southwest Gas, that company’s instruction is to go to a safe place and call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020. If you do not know which it is, leave the house and call 911 from outside.

Before You Call Anyone About a Gas Range

  1. 01

No smell of gas? Start with the power.

Wolf’s and Viking’s lists for a burner that will not light both open with electricity: the igniters are electric. Wolf adds a free reset, the power off for at least thirty seconds. The two makers’ lists, side by side.

  2. 02

Caps and rings, back where they sit.

After a clean or a boil-over, Wolf’s list points at a ring or cap not seated and an igniter still wet. Seat them, let it dry, try again.

  3. 03

    Look at the flame.

The City of Mesa asks for a steady blue flame on a gas appliance, and Wolf for a deep blue inner cone. Yellow on one burner points at that burner. Yellow on all of them, clean and seated, is a question for the utility on your bill. What each flame means.

  4. 04

A cold oven: read the display first.

On a Wolf, LO means the oven is preheating, and Showroom Mode switches the heat off on purpose. Neither is a fault. Wolf’s six checks.
