Inside a Sub-Zero
Two systems, not one.
A built-in Sub-Zero does not run one refrigeration circuit — it runs two. The fresh-food side and the freezer each have their own compressor, their own condenser circuit, their own filter-drier and their own evaporator. No shared air between the compartments, and no odour crossing from one to the other.
It also explains the symptom people describe most often: the freezer is fine, the refrigerator is warm. On a single-circuit machine that would point one direction. Here it usually means one of two complete systems has failed while the other runs perfectly.
There is a second detail worth knowing. Before the hot discharge gas reaches the condenser, it is routed through tubing in the door gasket seat and around the drain pan — the machine uses its own waste heat to stop the cabinet sweating and to evaporate defrost water. It is elegant, and it means a leak can appear somewhere that looks nothing like a refrigeration component.

That drier rule is not fussiness. Heating a filter-drier to remove it drives the moisture it has collected straight back into the circuit — which is how a repair becomes a second, worse repair a month later.
Dual Refrigeration
Most refrigerators run one sealed system and split the cold between two compartments with a damper. A built-in Sub-Zero runs two complete systems that never meet.
Why it is built this way
Fresh food wants moist air a little above freezing. A freezer wants dry air well below it. One system serving both is always a compromise, and the compromise is usually paid in humidity — which is why produce lasts longer in these cabinets and why the freezer does not smell of last night's dinner.
Why it changes the repair
It also produces the symptom we hear most often: the freezer is perfect, the refrigerator is warm. On a single-circuit machine that points at a damper or a fan. Here it usually means one entire sealed system has failed while its twin keeps running — and the two are diagnosed, and priced, separately.

Classic Series
Formerly Built-In, the BI prefix: side-by-side, over-and-under and French door. The earlier Built-In 600-2 generation — models such as 601R-2, 632-2, 650-2 and 695-2 — is the series our error-code list is written for.
Designer Series
Formerly Integrated: built flush and panel-ready, including the column refrigerators and column freezers that pair up behind matching panels.
PRO Series
The PRO 48, glass-door or solid-door — a professional cabinet with the same dual refrigeration inside.
Undercounter

Sub-Zero questions
The freezer works but the refrigerator is warm. Is that a major repair?
Not necessarily, but it is a sealed-system question. A built-in Sub-Zero runs two independent refrigeration circuits, so this symptom usually means one complete system has stopped while the other runs. The $119 visit establishes which component failed — a fan or a sensor is a small repair, an evaporator or a compressor a larger one — and you get a fixed price before anything is opened.
My Sub-Zero shows an error code. What should I do?
Write the code down and leave the unit powered: switching it off and on can clear the record we need. Codes are specific to the series — our error-code page lists the Built-In 600-2 codes from Sub-Zero’s own service literature. Then tell us the code with your request.
Do you repair the older 600 series?
Yes. The Built-In 600-2 generation — models such as 601R-2, 632-2, 650-2 and 695-2 — is the series our published error-code list is written for.
Is a twenty-year-old Sub-Zero worth repairing?
Often, yes — and the visit is how you find out. A sealed-system repair on a built-in costs a fraction of replacing the cabinet and the cabinetry around it, and the diagnosis tells you exactly which repair it is. If we advise against it, you pay the $119 and nothing else.
