Sub-Zero wine storage repair.
Designer columns, the Classic thirty-inch, the undercounter units: each zone behind the glass is built to stay within a degree of its number. When one stops doing that, we come to the house, across the Phoenix metro.
What We Service
Aphelion Appliance Repair, an independent company, repairs Sub-Zero wine storage, full-height and undercounter, across the Phoenix metro, including Scottsdale and Paradise Valley: Designer and Classic columns, the undercounter units, and the earlier Integrated, Built-In and 400 Series cabinets. The diagnostic is $119, waived when you go ahead with the repair, and repairs made with the parts we supply carry 12 months on parts and labor.
Designer Series
The panel-ready DEC columns at 18, 24 and 30 inches, and the tall DET with refrigerator drawers under the racks: zones, fans, sensors, the touch control and the door.
Classic Series
The 30-inch CL3050W, stainless or panel-ready, with its grille above the door, and the BW-30 before it.
Undercounter
The Designer Undercounter, two zones at 24 inches and one at 15, and the UW-24 before it.
Earlier cabinets
Integrated IW columns and the 400 Series: the 424, 427, 427R and 430. Wine storage from the other makers.
Inside Sub-Zero Wine Storage
Two zones, and a number for each.
Most Sub-Zero wine cabinets keep two zones behind one glass door and show a temperature for each. On the touch displays of the Designer units the figure on the left is the lower zone and the figure on the right the upper. The 15-inch undercounter has a single zone; the tall Designer model adds refrigerator drawers below the racks, with a range of their own, 34°F to 45°F.
How far a wine zone can be set depends on which Sub-Zero document you open. Its general answer gives 39°F to 65°F for Designer, Classic and UW-24 wine storage. Its answers for the Designer columns and for the Designer Undercounter give 40°F to 65°F. The 400 Series guide gives 38°F to 65°F, and says a microprocessor samples each zone every second to keep it within one degree of the preset. That guide and the one for the BW-30 and UW-24 preset the zones at 45°F and 55°F.
Sub-Zero says the humidity level in its units is not adjustable and that no average figure is available. The 400 Series guide says only that proper humidity is maintained throughout the unit; the sheet for the 24-inch Designer Undercounter credits dual evaporators with holding a constant, moderate humidity so corks do not dry out.
The door is full-view, UV-resistant glass, cleaned with a standard glass cleaner. Leave it ajar and the cabinet switches its own lights off to shed heat.
The alarm depends on the generation. On the 400 Series and the UW-24 a chime means a zone below 32°F, or 15°F above its setting. The IW models and the Designer Undercounter alarm when a zone sits 10°F warmer or 5°F colder than its setpoint for an extended time. On the WS-30 a production change in 2016 turned the temperature alarm into a door alarm, which chimes once the door has been left ajar for more than 60 seconds.
Several generations can report to the house. Sub-Zero’s guides for the 400 Series, the BW-30, the UW-24 and the IW models list a home security connection, which Sub-Zero leaves to the security company to wire. The Designer Undercounter has none; its alert sounds at the cabinet and, on a connected unit, in the Sub-Zero Group Owner’s App.
- ZonesTwo; one on the 15-inch DEU1550W
- Zone range38–65°F, 39–65°F or 40–65°F, by model
- AccuracyWithin one degree of setpoint
- HumidityMaintained; Sub-Zero says not adjustable
- DoorFull-view, UV-resistant glass
- CondenserBehind the kickplate; behind a grille on some models, such as the BW-30
On the panel: the Designer settings menu turns the door alarm on or off, sets how long the door may stand open, and keeps a page of troubleshooting and service information. On a BW-30 or UW-24 the word SERVICE lights for a temperature problem, or simply because the condenser needs cleaning. What two degrees of drift means: A wine cabinet drifting warm.
What Sub-Zero Asks You to Check
From Sub-Zero’s wine storage guides and support answers. The last column is where each row stops being the owner’s.
| What you notice | Sub-Zero’s checks, in its order | Where Sub-Zero says service |
|---|---|---|
| No lights and no cooling | Power on at the control; then power to the unit and the home circuit breaker | — |
| No lights, cabinet cold | A door left ajar disables the lights to remove excess heat: close it for one hour | Lights still out after the hour; the lighting is replaced by Factory Certified Service |
| A zone warm, or the unit running without rest | On for a full 24 hours; condenser cleaned within the last three months; no error code or service indicator; the setpoints; the door; new bottles, which raise the temperature for a while. Then 24 hours to recover | Still warm after those 24 hours |
| 55 and 45 on the display, and no cooling | The unit may be in Showroom Mode | Sub-Zero Customer Care, 800-222-7820 |
| Condensation inside, or damp labels | Some is normal after the door has stood open, sooner in a warm climate, and clears with the door shut. If excessive: the condenser, then the gasket for rips or tears | A ripped or torn gasket; moisture that does not resolve |
| SERVICE flashing, on a BW-30, UW-24 or IW | Condenser clean; then the unit off at the control panel and on again | The indicator keeps flashing |
| 40 1 09 on a Designer (IW) display | A cooling fault in zone 1, too warm or too cold: the home circuit breaker off for 30 seconds, then retest | The reset does not clear it |
Behind a warm zone Sub-Zero names four things: one of several fans; a temperature sensor or the thermostat; the door seal; and the sealed system of compressor, evaporator and condenser, to which a refrigerant valve belongs on some wine models. It adds that only its Factory Certified Service can determine the exact cause. We are independent: our $119 visit establishes which part has failed; a second appliance on the same visit is $69, and each fee is waived for an appliance you go ahead and repair.

Which Sub-Zero wine storage do you have?
Sub-Zero sells wine storage in three lines today: Designer, Classic and Undercounter. The letters in the model number say which line and which generation, and so which guide, alarm and temperature range apply. Where to find it on every maker.
| Line, in Sub-Zero’s words | Models | What it is | Rating plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Designer Series, column | DEC1850W, DEC2450W, DEC3050W | Panel-ready, 18, 24 and 30 inches wide; 59, 102 and 146 bottles; separate zones for reds and whites | Handle-side wall, directly below the control panel |

Classic was Built-In and Designer was Integrated, on wine storage as on the refrigerators: Which Sub-Zero series do you have?
Under Sub-Zero’s warranty, call Sub-Zero first.
Sub-Zero prints its residential warranty in the wine storage guides. For two years from the date of original installation it covers all parts and labor. For five it covers the sealed system in full: compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and all connecting tubing. Through the twelfth year it still repairs or replaces those parts, with the owner paying every other cost, labor included. A unit put in by a Factory Certified Installation company carries three full years instead of two.
Service under the full periods has to be performed by Sub-Zero Factory Certified Service. We are an independent company and not that service, so inside those years the call goes to Sub-Zero, at 800-222-7820, and a covered repair should cost you nothing. In the parts-only years the warranty names the route for an owner who uses other service: contact Sub-Zero for the part, because one bought elsewhere is not reimbursed. Fan motors and other electrical parts are not sealed-system parts, and the refrigerant gas is not covered by the sealed-system parts warranty. Is the built-in still under warranty?

Sub-Zero wine storage questions
What temperature range does Sub-Zero wine storage have?
Sub-Zero gives more than one figure. Its general answer puts Designer, Classic and UW-24 wine storage between 39°F and 65°F; its answers for the Designer columns and for the Designer Undercounter say 40°F to 65°F; and the 400 Series guide says 38°F to 65°F in each zone. Sub-Zero adds that the range may differ with the serial number, model and age of the unit, so the guide for your own model settles it.
Can Sub-Zero wine storage be wired to a home security system?
Some models can. Sub-Zero says the 400 Series and the UW-24 connect through three leads at the control board, one normally open, one normally closed and one ground, and that the Integrated IW models connect through low-voltage leads found behind the top trim; the home security company typically makes the connection. The Designer Undercounter (DEU) cannot be connected to a home alarm system: it chimes at the cabinet and, once paired, sends an alert through Sub-Zero’s owner app.
The display reads 55 and 45, but the cabinet is not cooling. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Sub-Zero’s wine storage guides say that a display showing 55° and 45° on a unit that is not cooling may mean Showroom Mode, and they give Sub-Zero Customer Care, 800-222-7820, as the next call. Separately, a new wine unit may cool only one zone at a time during its first 24 hours, which Sub-Zero calls normal.
Is Sub-Zero wine storage still under warranty after five years?
In part. Sub-Zero’s residential warranty, printed in its wine storage guides, covers all parts and labor for two years from the date of original installation and the sealed system, parts and labor, for five. Through the twelfth year it still supplies the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting tubing as parts, with labor and every other cost the owner’s. Inside the full periods, call Sub-Zero first: that service has to be its Factory Certified Service, and we are independent.
Where is the model number on Sub-Zero wine storage?
On the rating plate, inside the cabinet. Sub-Zero places it on the handle-side wall, directly below the control panel, on Designer wine columns and the earlier IW; at the top frame of the unit, inside the door, on the Classic CL3050W; on the ceiling near the left side on the Designer Undercounter; and on the ceiling or the underside of the control panel on the UW-24, the BW-30 and the 400 Series.
