From the Warranty and the Parts List

Sub-Zero compressor failed: replace it, or the refrigerator?

Count the years from installation first. Inside five, a defective compressor is Sub-Zero’s to repair, parts and labor. From the sixth year to the twelfth, Sub-Zero still supplies the compressor and you pay for the rest, labor included. Past twelve, a compressor at $430 to $621 retail, a new drier, refrigerant and labor stand against a new Classic at $12,055 to $16,745 on Sub-Zero’s own site, before it is installed, and before its panels if it is panel-ready.

First, be sure it is the compressor. Sub-Zero’s service manual rules out the condenser, its fan, the control’s power and the sensors before anyone opens the sealed system, and GE’s adds the relay and overload that start a compressor.

What does a failed compressor look like?

Rarely like one part. Sub-Zero’s combination models, among them the 500, 600 and 700-2 Series, the 648PRO and the Classic and Designer combination units, run two compressors, one per compartment, so a failed one leaves one side warm while the other keeps cooling. Sub-Zero’s own list of causes for a warm unit puts fans, sensors and the door gasket beside the compressor, evaporator and condenser, which is the point: the symptom does not say which. One side warm, the other perfect.

The machine keeps its own record. On the Built-In 600-2, from serial 2092137, the control logs code 40 when the freezer compressor runs six hours without a rest and 50 when the refrigerator’s runs four; after several such runs with the compartment still short of its set point, SERVICE flashes beside the code. Sub-Zero’s answers name the signs of too much run time an owner sees: spoiled food, warm temperatures, condensation and frost. What each code means.

The forums add the sound, with a caution: Sub-Zero counts clicking, humming and buzzing among the normal sounds of its units. What owners and technicians describe is different, a compressor that clicks every few minutes and never settles into running: the overload opening on a compressor that cannot start. A failing start relay or overload makes the same click, and nobody can tell which from the kitchen.

What Gets Mistaken for a Dead Compressor?

Each row is a cheaper fault that gives a compressor’s symptoms, with the document that names it. Only the first is the owner’s to fix.

HomeGuide’s own test for a bad compressor starts in the same place: clean coils, a condenser fan that spins freely, a control that clicks when turned from one end of its range to the other, and only then a professional with a meter on the connections. A broken condenser fan, it adds, keeps a refrigerator running and overheats the compressor. Why the valley’s dust makes the first row matter.

How is a compressor condemned?

Last, and by measurement. Sub-Zero’s 600-2 manual has its technicians rule out every mechanical and electrical component before fitting gauges, and says the evaporator temperatures read in Diagnostic Mode may make entering the sealed system unnecessary. When the gauges do go on, an inefficient compressor shows a high low side and a low high side, a pattern the manual keeps apart from a leak, a restriction and an overcharge.

A compressor that will not start is tested directly. Sub-Zero notes that a hard start kit can check one. GE’s flowchart for a Monogram that is not running checks the control board’s 120 volts first; with power there, it tries the compressor on its own, and if it starts, it sends the technician to the wiring, the overload and the relay rather than to a new compressor. What the relay and overload do.

The forums work the same way. In a July 2026 thread about a Sub-Zero 532 whose start relays kept failing, the advice was that a relay failing again and again points into the compressor, and a hard start test settled it: a labored start and a current draw heavy enough to dim the kitchen lights. A technician trainer wrote in 2017 that over 90% of refrigerator calls come down to controls rather than the sealed system. That is one teacher’s estimate, not a survey, but every manual cited here is written in that order. Warm on both sides, before anyone says compressor.

What Sub-Zero’s Warranty Says

Three periods, each counted from the date of original installation, and one list of what the sealed system is not.

  1. 01

Years one and two, or three

All parts and labor on any part defective in materials or workmanship. Three years instead of two when a Factory Certified Installation company put the unit in, on a new purchase and a first-time installation. The work is done by Sub-Zero Factory Certified Service, unless Sub-Zero specifies otherwise.

  2. 02

To year five: the sealed system

All parts and labor to repair or replace a defective compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and all connecting tubing, on the same terms: Factory Certified Service, unless Sub-Zero specifies otherwise.

  3. 03

Years six to twelve: the part

Sub-Zero repairs or replaces those same parts. With Factory Certified Service, the owner pays every other cost, labor included. With anyone else, the owner contacts Sub-Zero, Inc. to receive the repaired or replacement part, and Sub-Zero does not reimburse a part bought from non-certified service or any other source.

  4. 04

What is not a sealed-system part

Refrigerant gas, Sub-Zero says, and the condenser, compressor and evaporator fan motors and other electrical parts. Its 600-2 manual adds solder and the compressor electricals. So in year nine the compressor is covered, and the gas that goes back in with it is not.

The terms exclude any defect caused by negligence, accident or improper use, maintenance, installation, service or repair. Sub-Zero’s number for parts and service is 800-222-7820. Have the model and serial ready: Sub-Zero keeps warranty and service history under the serial number and the owner’s last name. Viking’s, Monogram’s and Wolf’s terms beside Sub-Zero’s.

What Does a Sub-Zero Compressor Cost?

Sub-Zero sells no repair parts online. It says genuine parts come through the parts distributor for your area, and that parts sold by other retailers cannot be guaranteed. For a price anyone can check, these are one independent store’s listings: SubZeroParts.com, retail, September 2026.

The store says it is independent and not affiliated with Sub-Zero, and each listing asks for the model and serial before ordering. Compressors for machines well past twelve are still listed. In years six to twelve none of this is your purchase: the part comes from Sub-Zero.

Why the part is the smaller share

Sub-Zero describes the work itself: the refrigerant recovered, the faulty component repaired or replaced, a new filter-drier, a vacuum pump drawing out the moisture, air and contaminants that entered while the system was open, and a recharge with the correct amount of new refrigerant. It takes 45 minutes to several hours, and a contaminated or restricted system many hours. The special tools and training, Sub-Zero says, make sealed-system work the most costly repair done to any refrigeration product.

Its 600-2 manual adds the rules. The filter-drier is replaced whenever the sealed system is serviced; neither the system nor the replacement compressor stays open to the air more than ten minutes; a service compressor that releases no pressure when its plugs are pulled is not used; and a burned-out compressor makes it a contaminated system, with the high side back-flushed and a second drier on the suction line. What goes back in, and why by weight.

What Does the Whole Job Cost?

Sub-Zero publishes no figure: it sends owners to Factory Certified Service and says costs are generally the same across a region. Neutral cost guides publish ranges, for refrigerators in general.

None of the three prices a built-in compressor. HomeGuide’s $200–$400 for the part sits below every Sub-Zero compressor listed above, and Housecall Pro notes that premium brands such as Sub-Zero carry higher parts costs than GE or Whirlpool. Read the ranges as general figures, not as the price of yours.

What does a new Sub-Zero cost?

On subzero-wolf.com, September 29, 2026: $13,605 for the 30-inch Classic over-and-under (CL3050U/S), $14,970 for the 36-inch Classic French door (CL3650UFD/S) and $16,745 for the 48-inch Classic side-by-side with dispenser (CL4850SD/S), all three in stainless. The panel-ready versions of the same three list at $12,055 (CL3050U/O), $13,295 (CL3650UFD/O) and $15,360 (CL4850SD/O), before the custom panels they are built to take. Those are the machines alone.

The opening sets terms of its own. For a 200/300, 500 or 600 Series replaced with a Classic (CL), Sub-Zero says the old panels will not fit and new ones are needed, the electrical and water line locations may have to move, and the opening requirements may differ by model; it sends owners to its current and legacy design guides to find the changes. A repair leaves the panels, the lines and the opening as they are.

Sub-Zero designs its products to last about twenty years on average, varying with use, room temperature, maintenance and repair history. The neutral guides’ rules of thumb were written for ordinary refrigerators: Fixr says never to spend more than half the price of a new model, and HomeGuide calls a refrigerator worth repairing when it is under 10 years old, under warranty, and the repair costs less than half of a new one. Half of the least expensive of these six, the panel-ready 30-inch, is about $6,030, far above every compressor range the guides publish, though none of those ranges was written for a built-in. About twenty years, and how to date yours.

A compressor is one part of the machine. For the faults around it, from a gasket to a Monogram’s foamed-in condenser loop, the general repair-or-replace guide takes them in turn; for the whole kitchen’s upkeep, the maintenance calendar.

Who may replace a compressor?

A Section 608-certified technician, under the Clean Air Act. The EPA requires certification of technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants, and it counts refrigerators and freezers designed for home use as small appliances, the work Type I certification covers. It also prohibits intentionally venting refrigerant, ozone-depleting or a substitute, during that work. It is a fair question to put to anyone before the gauges come out.

None of that changes Sub-Zero’s route. In years six to twelve, whoever does the work, the compressor still comes from Sub-Zero.

When is it a visit?

When the condenser is clean and the compartment is still warm a day later, or when SERVICE flashes with 40 or 50. Sub-Zero says a refrigerator reading above 48°F at its recommended 38°F setting is unlikely to recover from a cleaning. Inside the first five years, call Sub-Zero first.

Otherwise the visit is $119, waived in full when you go ahead with the repair. It answers the first question on this page: whether it is the compressor at all. If it is a relay, a fan, the board or a sensor, the repair is quoted as one written figure, labor and parts on separate lines, before any work begins. If it is the compressor, you have the model, the serial and the fault named, which is what Sub-Zero asks for. What happens on the visit · what we repair on a Sub-Zero.

Questions

Is it worth replacing the compressor in a Sub-Zero?

The numbers lean that way. The six new Classics priced here run $12,055 to $16,745 on Sub-Zero’s site before installation, and before panels on the panel-ready ones. Neutral cost guides put a compressor replacement at $300 to $1,250 for refrigerators in general, none of them for a built-in, and Sub-Zero compressors sell for $430 to $621 at retail. Up to twelve years from installation, Sub-Zero’s warranty supplies a defective compressor. Past that, the part’s availability, the rest of the machine and the cabinetry decide it.

Does Sub-Zero’s warranty cover a failed compressor?

For five years from the original installation, all parts and labor, through Sub-Zero Factory Certified Service unless Sub-Zero specifies otherwise. From the sixth year to the twelfth, Sub-Zero repairs or replaces a defective compressor and the owner pays every other cost, labor included. Refrigerant gas, fan motors and other electrical parts are not sealed-system parts, and defects caused by improper use, maintenance, installation, service or repair are excluded.

Can an independent technician replace a compressor under the Sub-Zero warranty?

In years six to twelve, by Sub-Zero’s own route: the owner contacts Sub-Zero, Inc. to receive the repaired or replacement part, and Sub-Zero will not reimburse a part bought from non-certified service or anywhere else. The labor is the owner’s either way. In the first five years, warranty service must be performed by Sub-Zero Factory Certified Service, unless Sub-Zero, Inc. specifies otherwise.

How do I know it is the compressor and not something cheaper?

From the kitchen, usually you cannot. Clean the condenser first, as Sub-Zero asks, and give it 24 hours. Past that, Sub-Zero’s service manual checks the condenser fan, the control board’s power to the compressor, the sensors and the evaporator fan before any gauges go on, and GE’s tests the relay and overload that start a compressor before condemning it.

Who is allowed to replace a refrigerator compressor?

A Section 608-certified technician, under the Clean Air Act. The EPA requires certification of anyone who maintains, services, repairs or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerants, and counts refrigerators and freezers designed for home use as small appliances, covered by Type I. Intentionally venting refrigerant during service is prohibited.
